BBC getting it wrong when they get it right
So the BBC managed to include a clip from Song of Steel on Pick of the Week - apparently from a live production. The intro mentioned the original Radio Ballads (Charles Parker etc) and Mike Harding got a name check but no mention of the new radio ballads and no mention of John Tams or Barry Coope even though they played Tams' Vulcan to Lucifer and... more »

Viola?
Does anyone ever play viola in a folk context? I got myself a new large (16.75 inch) viola three years ago and it spent most of that time lent to my son, who replaced the tailpiece (original ebony with added fine tuners looking rather crude) with a modern metal tuner-equipped one and strung it with good quality Thomastiks.... more »

Rock N Reel
I haven't seen Rock N Reel magazine for a while - has it disappeared again or have W H Smith just stopped stocking it? Their web site look s like it has been abandoned. Or do I need to look harder? -- Jim.

And a Dust Bug!
Everybody who had record decks would probably have had this plastic arm that travelled around with the LP and picked up all the fluff etc. I swear my white cat has a ghostly aura that send his fur everywhere. I'm having a nostalgic time trying to stay sane and going through all my LP's and my French Eps of the 50's.... more »

LP to CD
I have a CD made at my Boarding school in 1966. As far as I know there are only 3 left and I have 2. I would so much like to get it put onto CD. I know I could try to do it myself but it takes hours. Does anybody know anybody who does these type of transfers and also removes the pops and hisses? I also have 2 cassettes of family stuff and father reciting monologues,... more »

Today's Guardian - early collectors of traditional song
An informative article about the work of European folklorists, marred by yet another scream-inducing Guardian cliche - "homespun, bearded enthusiasts nodding appreciatively into their real ale." [link]
