How to change the charge fee after saving the transaction

Problem: I am trying to change the fee amount on a charge in the ledger, but it keeps changing back.

Solution: When you first enter a charge, the fee amount you enter is used to generate one or more splits in the list at the bottom of the charge form. If you go back into an existing charge entry, however, changing the fee will not recalculate the split amounts. In fact, the opposite occurs: the fee amount is continually reset to match the sum of the charge splits. As a result, once you have done the initial save of a charge, you can no longer change a fee by simply typing a new amount in the Fee field. You can, however change the fee amount indirectly by changing the amount of one or more splits. Here's an example:

You save a charge with a fee of $100 that split out as a $20 patient co-pay and an $80 insurance responsibility. At some later time, you realize that the fee should have been $125. You go to the ledger, open the charge and change the fee amount to $125. As soon as you tab off the fee amount, it goes back to $100 because OM is resetting the fee to the total of the splits ($20 + $80). Instead, you double-click the insurance split in the list at the bottom of the charge entry form and change the split amount from $80 to $125 and save it. The fee automatically changes to the desired $125 ($20 patient split + $105 insurance split).

Use the Search feature (binoculars). That will tell you whether the
account is in the active or inactive list.
If you do alot of that going back in forth, you can open both lists on
the OM desktop. Also don't forget that you can use the keyboard:
<Alt><F>,<P> Active patient list
<Alt><F>,<C> Inactive ("closed") patient list

Seth,
Any chance of making an INACTIVE PATIENT LIST icon right next to the ACTIVE
PATIENTS icon? It seems like small thing, but it's a bit of a pain when you
have to go back and forth searching for patients and have to hit File
Inactive instead of clicking on an icon. The same thing for Change Database.

Seth,
Thanks for your thoughts on this. We will re-evaluate what we are doing.
