4 Great Egrets - Gala Wetland 
  Birded northern Botetourt County this a.m., including the Fincastle, Kyles Mills, & Owens areas; Gala wetland; & Garden Mtn. Rd. The highlight was 4 Great Egrets at the Gala wetland. We also had a juv. Great Blue Heron there. 51 species in all. To bad no one is allowed the wetland - if we could walk through it - we would be able to find... more »

Spotted Sandpipers 
  I went up to W&L looking for the Painted Bunting this a.m. to no avail. Stopped at Cave Mountain Lake (Neacr Lochner Tract) on the way back. There were 2 Spotted Sandpipers on the spillway. I think it is highly likely that this species is breeding in northeast Botetourt - I also saw 1 bird on the James in Buchanan in June. What do you all... more »

7-12 Country Club Rd, Brughs Mill Rd, Peaks of Otter, Apple Orchard Mountain and surrounding areas 
  I birded from 6:00 am this morning until about 1:30pm this afternoon. 59 species total - 11 of these were warblers. Great Blue Heron Turkey Vulture Broad-winged Hawk (Apple Orchard Mt.) Bobwhite, Pied-Billed Grebe - New Peak Count fro House Wrens? 
  This morning I birded Botetourt County including Fincastle, Springwood Rd, Buchanan, James R. at Arcadia and Horseshoe Bend, Greenfield Lake, & Daleville. For those of you that like to bird Arcadia, you might try stopping at Riversde Park in Buchanan on your way - I saw a Wood Duck there this morning & have seen a Spotted Sandpiper there before. Yellow-crowned Night Heron 
  Howdy: David and I drove by the nest site of the Herons on Shank Street in Salem, VA around noon today. We parked and walked under the nest site. There was one young Heron standing on the branch that contains the nest. No other birds were observed. It was preening. Joyce Holt

Blue Ridge Parkway, Warbler Rd, Fincastle... 
  This morning I birded In Botetourt County enroute to the Parkway at Hwy 43. I followed the Parkway up to Otter Creek, stopping at the Peaks of Otter, Warbler Rd, Apple Orchard Mountain... etc. 53 species in all - the highlight was a Black-billed Cuckoo. Night-time Birding - Whip-Poor-Wills & Barred Owl 
  Since I signed up to participate in the Nightjar Survey, I covered my route tonight. I heard 2 Whip-Poor-Wills & a Barred Owl on Mountain Pass Rd just N. of the Parkway. Also heard 4 mocking birds while I was out tonight. Zach
