Subject: Immature Eagle

Saw an immature Bald Eagle over the house today in the Hollins area at about
12:30.  I couldn't decide whether to run in the house for the camera or to
enjoy the bird since running in the house is almost certain loss of the
bird.  Got the camera and found the bird!  There appears to be something
attached to the bird's neck and you can see the photos at the Harvey's Knob
website:

Input appreciated.....

Zach,

Summer Tanagers are uncommon to rare in the Roanoke area, although there
have been several reports over the years. I've seen two - one along the  road
just as you get on Carvins Cove property, and one on the north side of Mill
Mountain. I suspect there may be a few breeding in the South Roanoke area  and the
Rt. 220 South corridor leading to Franklin County. Barry Kinzie may  be able
to shed more light on this.

We've had one go through our yard in spring migration a couple of times, and
I'm pretty sure Joyce Holt gets them at her place at the base of Ft. Lewis
Mountain in Salem.

Zach,

I didn't realize you needed Summer Tanager for your life list.  They're
common in parts of the Piedmont. I had several at Smith Mt.  Lake State Park last
year. They weren't in the areas where most visitors  go, but were in extensive
clear cut areas along the highway leading to the  park entrance. This property
is part of the state park, but has not been  developed. The clear cuts are on
both sides of the road. You'll see gates  where you can park. The clear cuts
are hidden by the large trees along the  highway. The tanager's song is very
loud as they sing from the large  trees on the peremiter of the clear cuts.
Also listen for prairie warblers,  chats, yellowthroats, indigos, blue grosbeaks,
field sparrows, etc. in these  areas.
