I'm still trying to add these breeding species to my life list:
Bank Swallow
Horned Lark
Yellow-Throated Warbler
Golden-Winged Warbler
Blackburnian Warbler
Vesper Sparrow
Savannah Sparrow
Does anyone know where I can find these birds?

Bobwhite, Pied-Billed Grebe - New Peak Count fro House Wrens?

This morning I birded Botetourt County including Fincastle, Springwood
Rd, Buchanan, James R. at Arcadia and Horseshoe Bend, Greenfield Lake,
& Daleville.
For those of you that like to bird Arcadia, you might try stopping at
Riversde Park in Buchanan on your way - I saw a Wood Duck there this
morning & have seen a Spotted Sandpiper there before. Here's a map:

Carol,
I didn't know Yellow-Rumps were summer residents in VA. I thought
I saw one at the top of Warbler Rd this morning but didn't get a good
look at it. So I decided I must have been mistaken. Have they ever
been found along the Parkway around Apple Orchard Mountain before?

Howdy:
David and I drove by the nest site of the Herons on Shank Street in Salem, VA around noon today. We parked and walked under the nest site. There was one young Heron standing on the branch that contains the nest. No other birds were observed. It was preening.

This morning I birded In Botetourt County enroute to the Parkway at
Hwy 43. I followed the Parkway up to Otter Creek, stopping at the
Peaks of Otter, Warbler Rd, Apple Orchard Mountain... etc. 53 species
in all - the highlight was a Black-billed Cuckoo.

Night-time Birding - Whip-Poor-Wills & Barred Owl

Since I signed up to participate in the Nightjar Survey, I covered my
route tonight. I heard 2 Whip-Poor-Wills & a Barred Owl on Mountain
Pass Rd just N. of the Parkway. Also heard 4 mocking birds while I
was out tonight.

Yellow Rumped Warblers at Duncan's Knob Trail Bath County

On Tuesday June 17, Mike Donahue and I identified 2 male yellow-rumped warblers while completing a breeding bird monitoring route along Duncan's Knob Trail, Warm Springs Ranger District, George Washington National Forest, Bath County. This trail has been monitored since 1996 and is the first time we have picked up yellow-rumped warblers. They were heard and seen along different sections of the trail, but still above 3,000 feet.

Zach,

I didn't realize you needed Summer Tanager for your life list. They're
common in parts of the Piedmont. I had several at Smith Mt. Lake State Park last
year. They weren't in the areas where most visitors go, but were in extensive
clear cut areas along the highway leading to the park entrance. This property

We've had one go through our yard in spring migration a couple of times, and
I'm pretty sure Joyce Holt gets them at her place at the base of Ft. Lewis
Mountain in Salem.

Summer Tanagers are uncommon to rare in the Roanoke area, although there
have been several reports over the years. I've seen two - one along the road
just as you get on Carvins Cove property, and one on the north side of Mill

I birded Bedford County this morning including City Lake, Claytor
Nature Study Center, & Falling Creek Park. Highlight of the trip was
2 Loggerhead Shrikes - life birds for me! 42 species all together.

Green Heron 3 (at CNSC - but I couldn't find a nest)

I don't know if this is any help on the flycatchers, but I used to live where I saw them all the time. The Least Flycatcher says, "Hic up" and the Acadian Flycatcher says, "Pizza".

Small Flycatcher - Fincastle, Craigs Creek, & Hoop Hole Trail

I birded out to Craigs Creek from my house and then walked about 1.5
miles of Hoop Hole Trail.
I have attached an extremely faint recording of 2 birds making an
making an "ank-ank-ank-ank" it seemed to continuous to be the white -
breasted nuthatches normal call. You will need to turn up your
speaker all the way.

Poor Mountain and Bent Mountain, Roanoke County 6/10/08

I did some birding this morning on Poor Mountain and Bent Mountain in
Roanoke County. I got started on Poor Mt. around 7am and eventually made my way
down to Bent Mt., finishing up around noon - couldn't take the heat. Highlights
for me were the high altitude birds including a singing Least Flycatcher,
