Adney Gap Nighthawk Watch, September 5

I watched with my wife Elizabeth and with Jenny Chapman. We saw a grand
total of 36 birds, assuming none were counted twice. Several flying quite
low over the pasture, and at least one, maybe two, that landed on the
pasture and stayed on the ground for three or four minutes before taking
off again.

Last night I watched with Liz Cole and Jenny Chapman.
The total was 92 nighthawks, down considerably from the previous night.
Until the end, most were over a pasture down the Parkway to the southwest,
so far that even in my Swarovskis they were just dots and identifiable

I wasn't able to watch at Adney Gap tonight because of a social occasion.
But I kept an eye peeled on the deck of Bruce and Mary Beth Coffey's place

I know we all commonly look for nighthawks at dusk, but this morning around
10:00 I happened to see 13 fly over the house. First they headed north but
then circled around and went south. They were completely silent the whole
time.

with about 125 nighthawks putting on a real airshow, skimming close to the

Late Date for Song Sparrow breeding

3 Song Sparrows are in a nest in our garden. As of Wed the 27th they
had not hatched. This gives us a late egg date of the 27th; and
possibly as late as the 30th if they hatched today. Virginia's
Birdlife gives the egg dates as April 5th - Aug 2 for the Mountain &
