Here are a few basics i look for.
75% first or second with a change to.
distance
track
claiming/allowance level
jockey
Some other factor you notice about this horse
If he does awesome sprinting look for CHANGES to his best spot.
You need at least 2 factors
Horses are expensive to keep. Many races are simply exercise. If his last
race was a training mission and today's looks more to his ability to cash
then i may bet him. Some races are filled with horses like this. Some have
just a few.
In races with many live horses then you need to see who made a lot of
money at least twice under similar circumstances.
Bet to win only and you may bet more than 1 horse per race.
If your picks are as strong as you think they are and they have a good
day, then they will pretty much own this field. Place and show bets are
losers for many reasons including increased rake.
You may have a few good horses in any given race. Many of the selections
you pick will realize that today is not their day. They will not even try
once they realize that todays race could weaken their animal for no
payoff. Most horses have a window where they are in peak form. This window
gives them about 3 chances to score. Some have 1 chance, some are able to
win more than they do. The bottom line with this is, If a good
horse/jockey has to bust his nuts for a shot at second he wont try. He
will try next time.
Some horses run the same race everytime and pick up all sorts of checks,
small and large.
He is at his home track etc. He may win today.
I look for a horse that has been away from these conditions and is now
returning to a situation that he always does well at. At no 2 points in
time could this horse have been claimed for an overall loss by ownership.
Good luck remembering all of that and of course, at the races.
