Rules for printing
Hi, I am a bit of a beginner so apologies if this is obvious but I wanted to rewrite the rule for printing but my alternative seems to be broken and I can't see why. Here is my code: A body-part is a kind of garment-element. Hair is a body-part. One hair is part of every person. Hair-colour is a kind of value. The hair-colours are blonde,... more »

Uploading to the IF-Archive
If you upload files to the IF-Archive, please note that we've had to shut-off the "submissions" email address, as it was getting flooded with spam. In future, if it's not obvious what a file is, please upload an explanation with it as a text file. The web upload page, which is what most people use these days, anyway, is... more »

Programmer understanding of Inform 7 needed
It seems like large parts of the manual are written for a programmer but nowhere, except in a few cases, is there anything that shows how the Inform constructs map to more traditional constructs. For example, what's an object? (Are kinds the only things that are objects?) What's a method? Are there functions (outside of any objects)? Is there the equivalent of... more »

Activities take one turn or go for a while?
I don't get this sentence in the manual: "All activities start, continue for a while and then finish: however, no activity ever runs on for more than a single turn." If they don't run for more than a single turn, what does it mean to say they continue for a while?

Multiple actions in one rule?
I tried this: Before doing anything other than looking or taking the laptop in the Cabin: if the laptop is in the Cabin, say "The laptop is still sitting here." I know why this doesn't compile based on what Inform me. But then what's the best way to do this? It seems impractical to create multiple rules just to... more »

I7 Floating Point Maths
A little while ago there were some threads on the lack of floating point numbers in Inform 7. It occured to me that it may be possible to create a limited floating point number capability using the parts of a number specification. I have done some experimenting and come up with a beta extension that allows limited use of floating point... more »

Spatterlight 0.5.0
...Heh, I don't believe this! Just when I had given the Alan 3 language up as a bad job because it had no Mac interpreter that I could find. And I'd thought it was meant to be the language for me to learn on, as my technophobic husband's name is Alan and my son's name is ... yes ... Tor! So much for... more »

I7 Beginner's question: Room descriptions not printed out
Hello all, I've just rediscovered IF after a 20 yr hiatus (Infocom's MoonMist on Atari ST was my introduction, and the humorous responses to my random insults to characters kept me entertained for the many weeks it took me to 'guess the syntax' and finally solve the game with the, to me, improbable construction:... more »
