Comprehensive Character Death Tally

While gaming, it is a generally acceptable practice to keep one of a few pseudo-OCD in-character documents: a "kill tally," a detailed journal of everything that happened, or a list of the things your Goblin fears.  So, why not compile a list of all the character deaths we can remember?  At least, in games where death is not 100% certain (like All Flesh Must Be Eaten or Call of Cthulhu).  When we started compiling this list, it was under the assumption that deaths in our D&D campaigns were very rare.  However, as more old game write-ups surface, and we put Kurt's mind to better use, it seems we do not actually have the kind of "everyone survives" campaigns I personally thought we did.  Why, just look at the D&D lists!

CHARACTER CASUALTIES (where "casualties" are defined as characters played by a PC that died and did not come back, at least not in the same form, and/or not still played by a PC [or Gilliam].)

I've made some edits in blue where appropriate. (most notable being Drew's repeated use of giving my campaign world credit for Ogre's games)

-Rich

I just cried myself to sleep.

-Drew

Erik's 2nd Edition Campaign (Circa 1995)

  • Gilfried Gottburt [Drew] (Killed by a lightning bolt from a group of like 5,000 dark elves because Erik hated us :()
  • Crom Fuckbringer [Jake] (Killed by the same lightning bolt, if I am remembering this at all correctly, and I know at least one other person died, as only Ogre's Mons Compe escaped)
  • <named> Paladin [Rich] (killed in same swarm of lightning bolts, and If I remember right, the lightning bolt storm was a direct result of their fighters not being able to hurt me)

Rich's 1st Deadlands Campaign (Circa 1998)

  • Bruce [Gary] - You wouldn't say anything, but..killed by--Jabberwocky?
  • Future Japanese guy [Gary] - Killed in first session, to be immediately replaced by normal-timeline ancestor, Sprit-uppu san
  • Some Surely Dirty Man [Jon]  - Had heart attack upon the very sight of the Jabberwocky.  Turned into sentient zombie by [Erik].
  • Corey [Corey] - Died in his character background.  Kind of like dying via e-mail. EDIT: Was killed by 4 red eye glowy wolves that the party was supposed to easily save him from.

Rich's Torg Campaign (Circa 1999)

  • Sekhmet the Mathemagician [Gary] - Killed while weakened by gunfire and having the brain implant of alternate-cyberpapacy self take over his body
  • Pardner [Ogre] - Surely he had some sort of character name, and was absorbed multiple times (including once turning into the pseudodragon old west dude).

Rich's 2nd Edition Campaign (Circa 1999-2000)

  • Fitch Eddington [Erik] (first or second game, victim of love/gnolls [for the record, according to his journal, he killed 22 of them first before dying])
  • Abercrombie Eddington [Ogre] (aged to death by ghosts?, returned as Bardblade, the world's most beloved intelligent object)
  • Gadja [Buggar] (irrevocably slain by Avatar of War upon interfering with one of Prall's duels in the Avatar Arena.  Whoops!)

(Other Notable Deaths)

  • Evos Kindly [Drew] (slain by Prall's avatarbane arrows after Drew decided to stop playing him in favor of the Ogre Mage whose very name is so unimportant as to escape everyone's memory)
  • Prall [Lee] (killed by the rest of the party after she slew Evos)

Rich's Evil 3rd Edition Campaign (December 2000 - ~March 2001)

  • Jana [Leslie] ("killed by a wizard from New Richard's Court," not that any of us remember this)
  • Malius [Corey] (killed by mimics, ahahahah, mimics)
  • Jaeger Doomfist [Wiesch] (drew from a Deck of Many Things, had all of his magic items vanish, and was immediately slain by Death)

(Other Notable Deaths)

  • Daekaryas [Harry] (killed by murder)
  • Krieg [Brian] (accidentally killed by Vruussk during post-curse-transfer interrogation)
  • Joshua [Lucas] (not entirely sure that he did die, but I swear right after Lucas stopped playing he either keeled over from old age or suffered a similarly ignominious fate)

Rich's Poison World 3rd Edition Campaign (June 2001 - November 2001/Early 2002?)

  • Taufman Ivyheart [Ogre] (killed by something in that first cave [probably spooky bats--nope, it was a pair of undead])
  • Argon Articuno [Erik] (will subsumed by a Lich, turned into a death knight or something)
  • Krust [Erik] (the first half-Ogre to ever willingly leap into the middle of eight enemies)
  • Schtolteheim von Reinbach [Jake] (Congratulations!  You finished your dinner fastest!  You get dessert! ... AHAHAHAHA!)

(Other Notable Deaths)

  • Rok [Erik] (I swear we killed him after he stole our boat, Kurt swears he just escaped and was never heard from again, but in either case we totally never let him off the Poison World)

Rich's Crossover 3rd Edition Campaign (2002? - January 2003?)

No permanent deaths that I can recall, but ...

  • Jake [Jake] (Killed by just about everything during the first ~5 levels of the campaign; I only remember a Gravekeeper and the things at Menard's [maybe a big dog?  rock monster?])
  • Drew [Drew] (Killed by a force-caged Ogre Mage's final magic missile before death [clearly the same Ogre Mage he played in 2nd edition])
  • Susan [Susan] (Killed while on a top-secret dragon hunt with Drew; I do not remember if this was ever revealed?)
  • Frank [Frank] (Killed by something terrible, I'm sure; resurrected by being spat out of the mouth of Great Cthulhu)

Ogre's Three-Shot Homebrew Ehme Campaign (March 2001 - April? 2001)

None during the campaign, but ...

(Other Notable Deaths)

  • Knawck Silverwing [Kurt] (Killed by Peckneddlers at sea, turned into a zombie by Verak, and abandoned)
  • Blunkelflink McDuperdink [Erik] (Killed by Peckneddlers at sea, turned into a zombie by Verak, and abandoned)
  • Gobar von Ruck [Rich] (Killed by Peckneddlers at sea, turned into a zombie by Verak, and abandoned)
  • Charismatic Goblin [Jake] (Killed by Peckneddlers at sea, turned into a zombie by Verak, and abandoned)

Ogre's 3.0 Edition Ehme Campaign (September 2002 - April? 2004)

  • In the days before cruelty reigned supreme (though Verak did die to a demon/skeleton attack, and again [according to Richter's expert journal account] when Jackson showed up and killed him)

Ogre's 3.5 Edition Ehme Campaign (June 2005 - March 2008)

  • Korv [Erik] (mercilessly slaughtered by that cheatin' goblin, later murdered in kind by Marko and Hephestecles and Arthur [please note the ultimate fate of murderers!!!!!!!!])
  • Marko [Kurt] (disintegrated by the vicious sorta-mechanical sorta-spiders)
  • Hepestecles [Rich] (lightninged to death by the aforementioned viciousos)
  • Baro Harkless [Gary] (killed mid-sentence by poison)
  • Festhephtecles [Rich] (grabbed and unceremoniously dragged to the bottom of the Plane of Water by an enormous water-man)

(Other Notable [Non-Permanent] Deaths)

  • Gilliam x4 [Jake x4] (afflicted and killed by the disease that claimed the life of the Bardic College, poisoned by rogue agents, throat slit by demonologist cult leader, run over by train)
  • Arthur Ledgerman x3 [Greg] (blown up at random; would have counted if Greg had not stopped playing [though he probably would have not been alone on the boat in that case], brought back as Githzerai; also died fighting magma-shapeshifter things, also died somewhere else)
  • Stephphestocles x3 [Rich] (shadowed temporarily but good, burn/frozen/melted to death by dragonoids, cut down in his prime by those enormous demon-things)
  • Frederick x3 [Gary] (shadowed temporarily but good, burn/frozen/melted to death by dragonoids, cut down in his prime by those enormous demon-things)
  • Grudd [Drew] (shown the folly of doubling your hit points in one level by magma-shapeshifters)
  • Pip [Erik] (randomly eaten by enormous dogs)
  • Grokka [Kurt] (cut down in his prime by those enormous demon-things)

Rich's Carnival-Themed Deadlands Campaign (February 2006 - December 2006)

  • Tyler Stone [Greg] (Killed in the Happy Hunting Grounds by a horrific gargoyle; we should probably cover this up)
  • Thomas <something> [Greg] (Slain by the Children's Playland Fearmonger)
  • Bessie Flint [Susan] Mysteriously killed by unknown malignancies in the Dark Carnival's "House of Horrors."  Refused Saud's resurrection on this, her second death.

Rich's World's Largest Dun...Prison Campaign (December 2006 - January 2009)

  • Clive [~Tyne] (destroyed in the Assault on Lizard Hallway)
  • Orzo [Wiesch] (taken off in the night by a happy Neo-Otyugh and likely turned into an Otyugh)
  • Bodie [Ogre] (killed in the massive melee with the Inevitables and brought back by The Nice Room.  Killed again by Frost Giant Pet, brought back as something ... important)
  • I think somebody else died.  Did Wolf's Kin die?  No, he just ran off.

(Other Notable Deaths)

  • Vincent [Pee-Wee] (smashed by an imp)

Gary's Hollow Earth Campaign (April 2008 - March 2009)

  • Arthur Caesar [~Tyne] killed by Kraken
  • Angus MacGruber [Chase] killed by Kraken
  • Roddy Boyd [Ogre] also, coincidentally, killed by Kraken
  • Johnny Rockets [Kurt] killed in poetic fashion by the villainous Doc Steel in the climatic battle.

SPECIAL BONUS ERIK SECTION

  • Landorallen [Erik] (The mighty archer, laid low after changing into his bird form and slamming into the ground at mach 4 or 5 [please note, as always, this was caught on videotape and played endlessly])
  • Erik Decker [Erik] (When trapped in a mysterious "void" between worlds, after escaping from his cage, asked Drew to throw him into a mysterious vortex looming nearby, as it may have contained the way home.  It, of course, contained oblivion)
  • Erik Decker [Erik] (Used a wish to demand his deity G'Kilmdot show Erik his frustration, surely one of the best ways to go ever)
