I've moved back to Oklahoma now that the school year is done. On the way back, I stopped at the Oklahoma Welcome Center near Exit 313 in Miami. Here are my observations:
- First off, it's labeled "2008 Official State Map". Not 2008-09. Wonder if this is just to compensate for the special Centennial Edition of 2007, or is Oklahoma going back to annual map releases? - Opening up the map, the print quality is quite poor, worse than that of previous years. The lines are less sharp, noticeably so on the multilane expressways and freeways - the middle line blurs together with the color, making it muddy. - Also, the paper seems thinner than on the 2007 map. - The insets and OTA strip maps have been moved back to the reverse of the map. The print quality is better on the insets. - The printing error for SH-87 in McCurtain County appears to have been fixed. (Some Centennial Edition maps did not have SH-87 actually printed, leaving the shields to appear to be floating in the middle of nowhere.) - The surrounding states are all in black. Wonder why they decided to do this; seems like an awful lot of black ink wasted. - I don't know of much that has changed since last year, so I don't think there's anything new in the actual map. If someone else knows of something new they want me to look for, let me know.

What part? We oughta have an Okie road meet one of these days.

Is it one of those turnpike maps? I sometimes ask for one of those at tollbooths.
I had no idea the map was even out. Thanks for the heads up.

I went ahead and downloaded the map from the ODOT site (http://www.okladot.state.ok.us/hqdiv/p-r-div/maps/statemap/index.htm). The first change I noticed was just south of Keefeton. The 2007 map shows US 64 as 2 lanes for maybe 5 miles south of Keefeton, but the 2008 shows it being 4 lanes from Muskogee to Warner with the exception for a short stretch through Keefeton. But what is most interesting is the poor quality of the cartography of this new road.
And is there a real reason for 64 to be 4 lanes? Is it that much quicker to stay on 64 than to take I-40 to the turnpike?

I agree. I'm in the Oklahoma City area...we should have one sometime to look at the replacement Crosstown construction, similar to the construction tour at the St. Louis meet.

No, it was well stocked with the usual ODOT maps. Haven't ever seen an OTA map...next time I'm at a manned tollbooth I'll inquire about it. Are they strip maps of the appropriate road, or state maps, or what?

Yeah, it's sort of sad...cartography used to be the one thing ODOT was actually pretty good at, but now, it looks like they're slipping. It's a shame.

The problem is planning it around the weather. We got ice storms in the winter, tornadoes in the spring and autumn (and the rest of the year) and extreme heat in the summer, although last summer wasn't bad (Did anyone else notice that the only week that it was unbearably hot last year was the week of the PGA tournament? Maybe that was nature's way of saying "I hate golf!" And I concur with nature. As for a date range, I'd like to aim towards late summer/early autumn.
Were you in OK during the ice storm?

I was thinking of the Kansas maps that the KTA hands out. Somehow I got them confused. The maps you get at the tollbooths are the same maps as the ODOT maps.

Yeah, they had improved greatly over the maps of the mid 80s.

I noticed another mapo....instead of the actual zigzag-multiplex of I-540 on I-40 in Fort Smith, the map shows 540 going straight across 40.
Also, maybe more nitpickish, the strange OK 20/AR 43 stateline- multiplex south of the OK-AR-MO corner, shows mapped only as OK 20, and fully on the OK side.

For many years, the AHTD map showed the former routing of OK 112 between Cameron and Pocola. It wasn't corrected until the last few years.

Part of it does swing entirely into OK. but the majority of the route is right on the state line. The AHTD map shows this much more accurately.
