RIP: Neal Hefti, jazz trumpeter, composer, tune writer, and arranger 
  Neal Hefti (October 29, 1922, Hastings, Nebraska - October 11, 2008) is an American jazz trumpeter, composer, tune writer, and arranger. He began arranging professionally in his teens, when he wrote charts for Nat Towles. He became a prominent composer and arranger while playing trumpet for Woody Herman; while working for Herman he provided new arrangements for "Woodchopper's Ball" and "Blowin' Up a Storm," and composed "The Good Earth" and "Wild Root." After leaving Herman's band in 1946, Hefti concentrated on arranging and composing, although he occasionally led his own bands. He is especially known for his charts for Count Basie such as "Li'l Darlin'" and "Cute".... more »

History of the guitar on the BBC 
  There is a series currently on the BBC which has some great moments and old footage of guys like T-Bone Walker, BB King, Django etc. I don`t know what the situation is for you guys in the US for accessing the BBC website but the series is viewable on line for 30 days after broadcast. RIP: Leo Rosner, Accordionist and Bassist 
  Leo Rosner 1918-2008 FW from Geoff Orr Last Friday night, ace accordionist and bass virtuoso, Leo Rosner passed from us. He was 90. Adored in the Jewish community in Melbourne since the 1950's, Leo had come to Australia after spending an horrendous time in a concentration camp during the Nazi holocaust.... more »

What happened to the "Guitarist of the week"? - Lenny ... 
  There's a video about Tal Farlow that has some footage of Lenny Breau in it. He talks a bit about his technique, and he & Tal do some playing. It's not the best, but worth checking out. Detuning 
  Use larger stings for detuning. Also, if you want to experiment with the 7-string, there are plenty of used Ibanez solid-body 7s around; the short-scale double-cutaway (looks a little like an SG) is a great buy at $300 or so. I have one that i use on gigs all the time; sounds great, easy to play, and will do until my custom job is done. You can... more »
