Hello All,

On my website I have a message tab. I want to show a notification to
the user upon a new message.

One option is that I keep polling the server for new messages for the
user, but then what if he doesnt have a new message the whole day.

I want a method so that the polling processing starts for about 2
minutes, upon a new message.

But how do the client page know that there is a new message without
continuosly polling the server.

I guess gmail uses a similar thing.

Reverse AJAX is the best option to do this. Even though it is not
continuously asking server for an update it will maintain connection
with server(Similar AJAX technique) since the server can't send a
message to a web browser.
