You probably could take the free penguin pattern and not stuff it. Maybe make a cardboard cone and insert that into the body. You might have to modify the part near the feet, but I'm sure it's doable. If you make this, please post what you did.

I looked on Google's search for "penguin pattern" and one of the top hits in the results is for a very simple pattern that you could easily enlarge. Here is the url for it http://www.susanmdailey.com/penguin_pattern.htm
If you take a sheet of tissue or wrapping paper, fold it in half, and then place a print out of the referenced pattern over it so that you can follow the outline-- by taking a pencil and making the outline larger than the original--I think you might have a nice pattern for a centerpiece.
The only thing I do not like about the pattern is the eyes. But you could easily change the penguin's eyes in the final drawing. Note the bow ties on the three dancing penguins--one of my most popular animations--and the red bow tie on the male penguin--front of them-- who is kissing a female penguin.
Here is a link to one of my "Under Construction" web pages, that I have not as yet sent into cyberspace. It Is devoted to penguins but so far it is not complete. You might get some ideas for the eyes or other details from these animations. I hope this information is helpful to you.
