 Opening Scene
It is a dark night, the moon is out but there is a strong wind and many clouds blocking the moons light sporadically as the winds carry the clouds across the sky. The scene begins with a single guard standing with his back against a pillar Center Stage he is using the pillar as shelter against the wind. The winds passage through the palace creates a series of creepy sounds. With each of these sounds brings new shivers to the guard.
The stage is covered in moving shadows and chilling sound are carried by the wind
. Wind blows from stage left

  • Francisco- at his post sitting against a pillar to shield him from the wind. He is wrapped in his cloak and his spear sticking out from between his legs.
  • Bernardo- enters upstage left. A gust of wind caries a bone chilling whispers.
Bernardo: Who's there?  (scared)

  • Francisco- startled, stands with his back to the pillar.
Francisco: Nay, answer me: stand and unfold yourself.
  • Bernardo moves to center stage and puts his back against the same pillar as Francisco. Still scared
Bernardo: Long live the King!
  • Francisco- goes from scared to curious
Francisco: Bernardo? 
  • Bernardo- still afraid turns to look around the pillar
Bernardo: He
  • Francisco- turns and walks around the pillar coming face to face with Bernardo. Both jump, Francisco raises his spear to strike while Bernardo starts to dash back around the pillar. They both freeze then begin to laugh. They act out a brief fight scene then come together and embrace still laughing. 
Francisco- You come most carefully upon the hour.
  • A Bell sounds in the distance and both soldiers look off stage right.
Bernardo: 'Tis now struck Twelve; get thee to bed, Francisco.
  • Sound effect of a strong and create a burst of air to ruffle the actors. Both actors shiver and wrap themselves in their  cloaks.
Francisco: For this relief  much thanks: 'tis bitter cold, And I am sick at heart.
  • Another gust of chill wind carrying sounds that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight. The two soldiers shiver and look around uneasily. bernardo turns to Francisco with a weak smile on his face.
Bernardo: Have you had a quiet night?
  • Again the wind blows carrying its ere sounds. Francisco puts on a blank face and says with no emotion.
Francisco: Not a mouse stirring.
  • Bernardo losses his smile to a nervous cough.
Bernardo: Well, good night. (cough after Well)
  •  Francisco begins to walk up stage left when a gust of of wind carries a horrible wail, both characters jump, then turn to look at each other Bernardo Smiles and shrugs.
Bernardo: If you meet Horatio and Marcellus, The rivals of my watch, bid them make haste.
  • A conversation is heard in the distance, stage left.
Francisco: I think I hear them. Stand, ho! Who's There?
  • Francisco walks off stage left leaving Bernardo at his post.
