Hamlet Concept
Walmart is Denmark. Hamlet is an Executive Director of Business Development. Instead of the name Walmart, it will be referred to as Denmart. The characters will be living out the play while the rest of the USA lives normal non-shakespearen lives. Basically, anyone with a speaking role in the play is in their own little world. Since it is a Walmart (Denmart), more than just the characters from Hamlet must be present. The cast could possibly be historical reenactors so bored with their jobs at Walmart that they become obsessed with playing out Hamlet, eventually take the store hostage with their zeal for Shakespeare. The Historical reenactors should be from the Society of Creative Anachronism. Interjected into the action of the play are textless musically montages with the cast. These montages are a call back to "reality" for the historical reenactors; a time when they are forced to do their jobs; a time when they are taken away from Hamlet. The montage should be synchronized and repetitious. The Montages should provide the conflict for the reenactors to eventually take the store over to complete the play. The Montages: Ideas for repetitious actions during the montages: groups of greeters with saccharine smiles that melt away and reappear over and over; Check-out Clerks scanning items and filling impossibly expanding bags from an infinite amount of items that vacant shopper have brought to the Checker to buy; The Props should be found object from the store. Objects modified to suit the needs of the play. The object and the material cannot be paid for. The prop have to have been misappropriated by the historical reenactors. Mops, Brooms, an American flag for a cape, etc.. ![]() ![]() Strangely enough I think she would make a great Polonius. ![]()
