The setting takes place in 1990's at an asylum that is run by Hamlet's uncle Claudius. Hamlet’s father was sent there earlier due to having hallucinations. He later killed himself by his brother Claudius’ coaxing. Hamlet’s mother Gertrude marries Claudius and lives with him at the asylum. Hamlet has been having problems while at school that involve the same disease as his father but instead Hamlet has been secretly murdering people. Hamlet decides to confront these demons he’s been having by going back to the asylum by confronting his uncle. All other characters in the play are either patients at the hospital or medical staff.
Gertrude is sitting looking at herself in a mirror in her bedroom while Polonius hides in her closet to the right of her. Hamlet enters on the left hand side carrying an apple.
HAMLET: Now, mother, what’s the matter? Hamlet crosses over to his mother and stands behind her wrapping his arms around her from behind.
GERTRUDE: Hamlet, thou have thy father much offended. Takes Hamlet’s arms off of her and continues to look at herself in the mirror nervously looking at the closet.
HAMLET: Mother, you have my father much offended. Grabs her and forcibly turns her around.
GERTRUDE: Come, come, you answer with an idle tongue. Hamlet takes out a knife and begins to peel the apple. Gertrude begins to back awary from Hamlet.
HAMLET: Go, go, you question with a wicked tongue. He puts a piece of the apple into his mouth and offers one to his mother. She refuses.
GERTRUDE: Why, how now, Hamlet! Hits the piece away from herself. Hamlet becomes outraged.
HAMLET: What’s the matter now? He swipes some of Gertrude’s things off her vanity. He waves the knife around.
GERTRUDE: Have you forgot me? Looking even more frightened Gertrude edges toward the closet. Hamlet notices and comes between her and the closet.
HAMLET: No, by the rood, not so: You are the queen, your husband’s brother’s wife; And—would it were not so!—you are my mother. Hamlet begins to advance toward his mother the apple forgotten on the floor. Gertrude begins to rise from her chair to leave the room.
GERTRUDE: Nay, then, I’ll set those to you that can speak. She turns to leave when Hamlet jumps forward grabbing her and forcing to back into the chair.
HAMLET: Come, come, and sit you down; you shall not budge; You go till I set you up a glass where you may see the inmost part of you. Putting the knife to her throat he forces his mother to look at herself in the mirror with him standing there with a big grin on his face as he begins to apply pressure.
GERTRUDE: What wilt thou do? Thou wilt not murder me? Help, help, ho! Gertrude begins to scream and struggle. Hamlet realizes how frightened his mother is and backs off but hears a noise in the closet and advances toward it. Opening the closet he stabs the man inside which is Polonius and Gertrude screams.
