POPCRU 6th National Congress

The Police And Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) will be holding its 6th National Congress on the abovementioned date, time and place under the theme “Consolidating The Workers Power And Advancing Transformation Within The Criminal Justice Cluster”.

 

The congress will be officially opened by the President of POPCRU Zizamele Cebekhulu, the following leaders from the Tripartite Alliance will also be addressing the delegates attending the congress; ANC Deputy President Jacob Zuma, SACP Secretary General Blade Nzimande, Cosatu General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi including International guests.

 

The congress will be attended by 600 POPCRU delegates from all nine Provinces, 200 National and International Friends and Guest including leaders of the ANC, Cosatu, SACP Alliance. Various Ministers of Safety and Security Charles Nqakula, Department of Correctional services Ngconde Bafour, Department of transport, National and Provincial Commissioners and DG’s of SAPS, Correctional Services, Private Prisons and Traffic.

 

Various comrades and leaders including Cosatu Secretary General Zwelinzima Vavi, Allan Boesak, Gregory Rockman will be recognised and rewarded for exceptional leadership and guidance in the fight for a better life for all, including workers and the poor.

 

The Congress delegates will be electing new leadership that will take this giant union to the next level of deepening our 13-year-old democratic dispensation whilst defending the gains of the National Democratic Revolution.

 

The congress will be discussing and debating various issues such as Transformation of the SAPS, Department of Correctional Services, Private Prisons and Traffic Services in the country and the African continent in general.  We will also be discussing and resolving on new strategies and campaigns to defend the gains of the working class achieved over the last decade of democracy. We shall also be finding ways of assisting in the establishment of trade unions in the SADEC region especial in criminal Justice. Another important resolution will be around advancing working class hegemony within the ANC.

 

Focus will also be given to the following burning issues; Overcrowding and safety in South African Prisons, Police killings and attacks, Fighting Crime and Corruption in a democratic South Africa.  Transformation of the Judiciary including the Department of Traffic, HIV and AIDS know your status. Working conditions of members in the SAPS, Correctional services, Private Prisons and Traffic services.
