Discussion on links

Sai, are these projects still being considered? In reading the Encyclopedia for Fictional and Fantastic Languages, newly published, it seems that we should make a go of ASP, at least, since the authors of EFFL have made a call for a "sociological consideration" of CONLANG. Besides, I think Greenwood Press could be a venue. Also, Edwin Mellen.... more »

Hi all, My name is Arik Cohen, and I am a semanticist from Ben-Gurion University, Israel. I heard about this project, and am fascinated. I have never tried to design a language myself, but I have just taught an introductory course on "linguistics through science fiction". This course was aimed at students who had had no previous exposure to... more »

[CLBP] Participation agreement
|

...'s my attempt at fairness. ...Primary / co authorship in this case is meant as "what goes on the cover", basically. The reason for max-3 is simply that AFAIK that's the normal limit practically speaking. On digging out my Ling 1 book (Contemporary Linguistics , it seems I was wrong on that - there are 4 coauthors listed.... more »

CL101: "What is language"
|
| |
This is usually the first chapter of an intro linguistics book. I suggest we drop it in favor of covering the same info implicitly. The usual points are that lanauages: * have symbols & grammatical signals I.e. are communicated in some mode(s): written, oral, gestural (, ...?). Modes should be covered in the first chapter, to set up the next... more »

I've already gotten some enthuiastic responses, so hopefully we should be having some new contributors soon (and perhaps introduce a few new people into the general conlanging community). :-) - Sai [link] Hello, everyone. The Conlang Books Project has recently started. Its goal is to produce... more »

AUX: Create or adapt?
|
| |
A fundamental question: Should we: a) create a new auxlang for the book, or b) take an existing auxlang and adapt it to the book's purposes? If (b), then what auxlangs are the most suited for the job? This is not at all the same thing as "what is the best auxlang?"; the question here is "what would be the best suited for instructional use, show the most... more »

META: Royalties, copyright, credit, & participation agreement
|
| |
One thing we need to set up pretty soon is a formal participation agreement. Since this is a project intended to produce two books for Actual Sale On Shelves, this needs to cover a few things: * copyright - who owns copyright to what? - do we own individual copyright to parts, or only as a group? e.g. can... more »

META: Publishers, distribution & target audience

[summarizing a conversation w/ an anonymous informant, who gets the credit for most of the ideas here...] 1. What publishers should we target? Criteria: * decent price for general availability * can pimp the book and not just print it * can make it available on Amazon * "with it" enough not to take 8 years to publish... more »
