                      REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
                      remove comp.object.moderated

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) to remove the moderated
newsgroup comp.object.moderated.

RATIONALE: remove comp.object.moderated

The last approved article was in April 2000.  The active lifetime of
the group was relatively short, from December 1998 to April 2000, when
the system hosting the moderation was hacked.  Combined with a job
change for the moderator, the group never recovered.

If the group is removed, discussion of object-oriented issues may
continue in the unmoderated group, comp.object.

Alternatively, a new moderator could be assigned to the group. Current
traffic in comp.object averages 15-20 articles per day, so there may
be enough discussion to sustain both an unmoderated and moderated
group.

Because of its name, it does not make sense to convert the group to an
unmoderated status, and in any event, it would be redundant to the
unmoderated comp.object.

HISTORY:

The newsgroup comp.object.moderated was created in December 1998 as an
alternative to the unmoderated comp.object, which was created in
September 1989.  The group comp.object.moderated was active until
April 2000, when the system hosting moderation was hacked, which
coupled with a job change for the moderator resulted in the group
being interrupted permanently.

During its 17 months of active approvals, there were typically 20 to
40 threads per month.

Since 2000, there has been off and on discussion about reactivating
the group, but this has not occured.

CHARTER:

The newsgroup line is:

comp.object.moderated   A moderated forum for Object-oriented issues.

The charter (extracted from the CFV):

Comp.object.moderated is a moderated news group for discussion of
issues directly related to Object-oriented theory and Object-oriented
practice, and of general interest to the Object-oriented community.
Any such articles are welcome, and are recommendations of alternative
approaches in response to questions directly related to
Object-oriented theory or practice.

PROCEDURE:

The full group removal procedure is documented here:

  http://www.big-8.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=policies:rmgroup

Those who wish to comment on this request to remove this newsgroup should
subscribe to news.groups.proposals and participate in the relevant threads
in that newsgroup.

To this end, the followup header of this RFD has been set to
news.groups.proposals.

All discussion of active proposals should be posted to news.groups.proposals.

If desired by the readership of closely affected groups, the discussion
may be crossposted to those groups, but care must be taken to ensure that
all discussion appears in news.groups.proposals as well.
