Should we have a universal runtime?

I mean a runtime for all dialects to deploy web enabled applications, to run as plug-in to common browsers (as flash to Firefox/IE/etc) as well as in a universal specified Smalltalk web application player (as stand-alone flash player). Beginner question: a := OrderedCollection new add: 1. Value is 1 (SmallInteger) and not #(1) 
  I saw Seaside in Action and decided to take a closer look on Smalltalk. I read the Bluebook ([link]), specially Chapter 2 - Expression Syntax - Messages - Parsing. But what is this? a := OrderedCollection new add: 1. returns a SmallInteger and not the expected #(1). But why?... more »

GNU smalltalk, how to install? 
  I have dwnloaded GNU Smalltalk but I don't understand how to install it and the readme isn't very clear. Should I run the configure or the make.c ? Can I use it as a normal programming language with emacs?

Multi-threaded and file access 
  Developing a multi-threaded application which accesses files. Individual threads do file IO - reading and writing. Originally, I designed this with mutexes so files would not become mangled. However, in retrospect I believe the underlying OS (Windows, Linux) should handle file-locking issues. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?... more »
