More impossible Caller ID [Telecom]
Every now and again, I ignore calls coming from what I assume is a telemarketer. The latest two were from 506 221-14516 and 506 224-47271 That's right. 11 digits were passed along in Caller ID. How is this done? Why isn't it a fixed-length field of 10 digits and why isn't there any error checking along the way?... more »

Where is area code 390? [Telecom]
...It's an out-and-out SCAM which is violting the Do-Not-Call Act. There is NO area code 390 in the North American network. I also doubt that this call is coming in from Italy, which is Country Code +39. In North America, ALL three-digit area code combinations with a '9' in the middle digit are RESERVED for use in a future expansion... more »

Cost of COCOT? [Telecom]
...I have a couple hundred of them I don't expect to be doing anything with. They cost me a thousand dollars apiece, but I doubt that I can hope to get much for 'em. What are they worth?

Where is area code 390?
Where is area code 390? Someone whose caller ID data says 390-599-9148, name "LRG", is apparently violating the Do-Not-Call Act. We got a call from a machine that said "press 1 to speak to an agent" and did not connect us to anyone when we pressed 1. Googling the number, I see that others have... more »

The "bar wars" AT&T vs. Verizon [telecom]
Both AT&T and Verizon cell phone units have been running frequent TV ads each claiming the best coverage. Any objective information available on who is better?

Cost of low-use payphone? [telecom]
Would anyone know accurately the going rate for a phoneco provided pay phone? Payphones on private property always had cost/commissions. If a payphone had low use, the property owner had to cover the cost of the phone to the phone company. If the payphone had heavy use, the property owner would get a commission from the telephone company.... more »

Toll Free Telephone Service [Telecom]
Responding to an earlier query about toll-free phone service, I use Uni-Tel Communications Group out of Naperville, IL. I made the arrangement years ago through a reseller, and the actual provider has migrated a couple of times, but I have always had good service. I pay 5.9 cents per minute (billed in tenths of minutes) with no... more »

Best way to collect fines from telespammers? [Telecom]
Anyone have some advice or even specific attorneys who will deal with scumbag companies that use abusive/illegal telemarketing tactics? A quick synopsis is this: 1) This company offers something with the "bait & switch" to get your number. 2) After they repeatedly call using an auto-dialer (which, in... more »

It never rains, but it pours [Telecom]
Sorry that I've been aware from the moderator chair until tonight: I saw my wife off to work at 6:45 this morning, went out to drum up some business, and came back at ~10 to find that a pipe had broken and my basement was flooded. The emergency team has just left, and there are dehumidifiers and fans... more »
