Bristol Skillswap: Thursday 26 July
DARREN'S PRESENTATION, SCRIPT AND CODE: On his blog here
What: A pragmatic look at Symfony (the PHP web application framework)
Who: Darren Beale from Siftware. No, not the guy from Kosheen, the other one, but it's OK, he's a Bristolian...
Main topics:
1) MVC in a nutshell
2) Best practice without too much effort
3) How to knock up an admin system in no time
4) Easy Ajax
5) Push-button deployment
What will we learn:
There are a bunch of PHP frameworks that recently hit the mainstream. The ones most have heard of include Cake, Symfony, Zend & Seagull. I chose Symfony off the back of its documentation alone and have since embraced it for new builds.
What you will get is a run-though of the key points of the Symfony framework and how it applies to producing contemporary web applications. We'll throw together a quick application and then deploy to test and live.
What you will not get is an evangelistic and blinkered talk. I like Symfony, but that's because I now know enough to be productive with it. I'll also mention a few areas where I think Symfony could improve.
The talk will suit developers looking to either choose a PHP framework or see what all the fuss is about. There will be coding on-the-fly and a Q&A at the end though don't expect guru level Symfony knowledge.
