Hi folks
Thought this[below] was an interesting review of an unconference experience.
(IMHO) Similar wins and challenges to both the TALO swapmeet and the
Adelaide BarCamp. Feels like the process of finding which things need
to be explicit and which need to be flexible is still evolving.
Also at the breakfast for wikimedians in Adelaide there was a wiki
census - a batch of A4 sheets with sticky dots where you placed
yourself in response to questions directly onto a
graph. It was interesting to see the information grow as the papers
moved around the table.
1-10 of geek or bookworm, current participation level and goal,
educational background, age and gender, employment, amount of time
spent editing an article and amount of time youd like to spend, was an
interesting format and I bet the collated information will be very
interesting. It felt a bit unconferency too.

Subject: Feedback wrap up from the Web2Open
To: barcamp@googlegroups.com
Hey all,
For those of you who made it -- w00t! It was a grande time, even if
sometimes those darned old skool conference people were too loud in
the hallways at times. ;)
Either way, as experiments go, the lot of us in the wrap-up session on
the last day thought it was a resounding success! However, for those
of you approaching or being approached by your local conference
organizers to help them do such things, here is the feedback fyi.
We'll probably be publishing it on the Web2Open wiki, too, in the
tradition of openness:
• Good practice for future talks
• Small groups, but okay for discussion and presentations
• Felt that the Web2Open was ghettoized
• Pushed to the boundaries
• Could have added 2nd day to the printed schedules that were
being held out to Web2Expo attendees
• Great diversity of speakers
• People in the hallways were loud and talking over speakers
• Microsoft was sad. Spammed the Mashroom and didn't
participate or bring developers
• Nice to have an inexpensive/free space to meet with people
• Younger people were here, like high school students - cool.
• Alot of people wanted to see
• Need better wireless...bring in a LAN next time?
• Noisy in open cubicles
• Need microphones for the presenters
• Felt marginalized - "The Yellows"
• Not being seen as valued as the other things
• Had a great time doing presentations and will lead to more
• Less pressure. Very familiar and friendly.
• Marginalized and fighting against noise.
• People in the main conference didn't take it seriously
• it wasn't as integrated as it should be
• 1.0 version of what the open should be like
• Open schedule spots timed better to encourage people to come
with ALL badges?
• Should be more mentioned in the keynotes
• Web2Open in slides alongside sponsors?
• unsponsored let to less benefits (no coffee/snacks)
• The water was great -- thanks!
• After we posted on the grid, would have been good to write
room schedules on rooms
• Cooperate with BoFs better
• Another level of badge holders: Web2Open Participants (new colour)
• Conferences are like buying a nintendo game without a controller
• Participant Pass ++
• Everyone that was talking during the Web2Open was DOING what
they were talking about - spoke from experience. Cool.
• Participatory nature great
• Assigning topics to spaces difficult
• Want a description for each workshop and a schedule to carry around
• Want bios on people who are talking
• What about a blank schedule so people can fill in their own
to carry around?
• Ad Hoc-ness loses
• Hard to hear people asking questions
• Need rooms to be set up in semi-circles with tighter chairs
• Open & closed rooms
• Roundtables, discussion groups, etc. for opening day (akin to
workshops?)
• New discussions emerge over time in the open space
• Very cool
• Wireless mics
• It's about our personal growth
• A few more people to give feedback would be nice
• You'll meet with the people you need to. Volume isn't important
• Don't care about numbers.
• Maybe we should set better expectations
• Document on what to expect
• Encourage speakers to self-promote
• Spaces for speakers to promote and put up more about their talk
• Need a break in the middle
• Need more opportunities for session follow-ups
• More promotion on the main website...couldn't find it
• web2open.conferenceer.com
• Conference goers found it hard to juggle both
• This is the community that feeds new energy into the conference
• It's all about the coffee/sandwich
• We don't need no stinking sandwiches!
• Need to fix the timing (needs to be the same as the general
conference sessions)
• Main show was quite US-centric
• Web2Open is Web 2.0 in the real world
• Lighting was better in the alcoves (natural light) ++
• Thanks to O'Reilly & CMP for doing this! You Rock!
If you need any clarification, feel free to ask. :)

Sincerely,
Tara
