I'm looking high and low for a GPS (ideally bluetooth, but serial is
fine) with a built-in digital compass that actually exports the
digital compass reading in the NMEA Stream.

I'm finding lotsa GPS units that have a built-in digital compass, but
they don't export the digital compass reading in the NMEA.  Not
overriding the VTG bearing, not in a different sentence, it's just not
there.

Does anyone have a GPS that they know serially/btooth exports a
bearing from an on-board compass?

Hi,

Have you looked in the NMEA settings menu on the Garmin units with
Compass? I believe it is not turned on by default, but can be enabled.
This would work only with units with the serial connector like 76
series.

So you're thinking that the ones that have a compass can actually be
enabled/disabled to export that to the nmea stream?

Seems unlikely.  I would guess that if they don't normally do it when the
compass is turned on, they won't be able to.

But we should be certain why not, and one reason for that is that both
compass and bluetooth suck power like there's no tomorrow.  Are you
looking for a handheld device which does this or is it okay for the device
to be powered through a cigarette-lighter-type fitting ?  Because if it's
running from internal batteries you're going to have to change them quite
often.
