ef...here are the basics of the Jason Scott fiasco. Jason Scott's mother, Kathy Tonkin, got involved with a pentecostal church that turned out to be more of a cult. She had 3 or 4 kids and her oldest, then about 17, is Jason Scott. She also got them in this cult and at some point realized that she was in a destructive group and she got out.. The 'minister' and others in this cult convinced her children that their. mother was possessed by Satan and that they should leave her home. Apparently, other members of this church took these kids in.
At some point in here Kathy contacted shirley Landa who was a CAN affiliate. CAN had a loose network of people around the country who were local affiliates. These were local people who were involved in educating the public about destructive cults. Most of them had been abused by some cult. Kathy was desparately seeking help in getting her kids back home where they belonged. Kathy contacted Rick Ross who is a well known and respected cult counselor. She engaged him to come and work with her kids He was able to convince the younger kids that their mother was not possessed by Satan and that they should be with their mother. Kathy engaged 3-4 local guys that she knew to be with Jason while Rick Ross talked and worked with him. I believe that they went out to dinner or a movie and Jason ran off to the police and claimed that he had been kidnapped. Ross and the guys that Kathy had engaged were, I believe, picked by the police but soon released. Jason , I believe, stayed with the pentecostal group and Ross went home.
Here is where this scenario gets weird. A phoney minister and scientology lackey named George Robertson tipped off scientologist, in-house lawyer, Kendrick Moxon about this affair. Moxon was an unindicted co-conspirator in the case which sent Mary Sue Hubbard and 11 other scientolgists to prison. Since then Moxon has risen in the ranks and has successfully used scientology's tax-exempt money to harass former memberss and critics all over this country. He was pretty much in charge of the conspiracy to destroy CAN and set up the barrage of harassing lawsuits against CAN. Moxon saw this Jason Scott affair as a way to possibly tie up and disable CAN with litigation. Moxon contacted Jason Scott and dangled a million dollars in front of him and persuaded him to sue CAN and Rick Ross. The lawsuits would be handled by Moxon and financed with scientology's tax-exempt money.
The lawsuits went to a jury trial in Seattle. CAN got caught with low finances and a misguided belief that this would all be thrown out. A local attorney was engaged and Moxon very neatly got the court to deny the jury the information that scientology was behind this and was financing Jason Scott. Moxon brought out a parade of cult apologists to testify...paid for by scientology and you know the rest...awards of several million dollars against both CAN and Rick Ross.
CAN all along had inept legal advice and help and most of it pro-bono. Bad advice told CAN to file for bankrupcy to forestall collection and allow time to prepare an appeal. CAN ended up in the US Bankruptcy Court. Moxon successfully got the original appointed Trustee dismissed and his own choice was appointed. This Trustee, Philip Martino, was hostile to CAN right from the start. For example, he told me that he was throwing CAN mail in the garbage ( he had taken over CAN mail). Was Martino on Moxon's dirty payroll...we don't know but every action indicated that these two were in cahoots.. Martino ordered CAN to close and the CAN assets put up for sale to satisfy Jason Scott's award. The CAN staff was given an hours notice to close up.
CAN's assets were estimated at about $20,000, so where was Moxon going to get the million dollars that he had promised Jason Scott? Jason Scott finally realized that he had been conned, and used by Moxon and the Church of Scientology. Jason fired Moxon as his attorney and settled with Rich Ross for $5,000 and counseling. Jason has since been getting personal counseling from Ross. Jason tried to nullify the CAN award but the judge told him that he couldn't. So, Jason Scott sold his 2 million dollar award to scientologist Gerald Beeny for $20,000.
The CAN Files were to be included in the sale of CAN's assets which were purchased by another scientologist. Nobody in CAN could match the auction offer. Some of the public found out about the CAN Files situation and protested to the Court who put the CAN Files under Court Seal and in a warehouse.
There is a good deal more to this than I can go into here but repeated efforts by scientology have been made to get the CAN Files which among other things contain many names and addresses of people who had contacted CAN. Scientologist, Gerald Beeny successfully convinced the Court to turn over the Files to him to satisfy the judgement of the award that he purchased from Jason Scott. CAN's legal help had long since evaporated and Ed Lottick, the CAN Board president paid for a 40 page legal Brief to show the court why this confidential information should not be turned over to Beeny, who was acting as an agent for the Church of Scientology. Judge Quinn refused to read the Brief and refused communications from persons concerned about their personal information within the Files. Ed lotttick realized that if CAN didn't release the Files, Beeny and Moxon would come after his and other CAN Board member's personal assets to satisfy their purchased 'Award'.
And so, sadly, the CAN Files were turned over to Beeny on May 3. Kendrick Moxon flew to Chicago to be present for this triumph and was seen taking pictures at the warehouse and besides himself with glee.
