3. Story: When you Present, Focus on a Friendly Person
Dear P.,
I have been successful as an account executive for a medium sized
advertising agency. When I first began my employment, I was shy and had
difficulty presenting in front of a group.
My boss suggested that I enroll in a speech class at a local
university to improve my skills. I followed his suggestion and I
completed an excellent course. One of the techniques the instructor
taught us was to focus on one supportive person in the audience who is
obviously enjoying the presentation and focus on that person when you
speak.
Two weeks after the class was finished, I had to give a
presentation to group of 15 people from a local manufacturer. We were
competing with three other advertising agencies for the account. I was
very nervous and I used the new technique I had learned. One gentleman
was very attentive, smiled and seemed very interested in my
presentation. By talking to him, I was able to overcome my nervousness.
I felt the presentation went very well.
After the presentation we had a short social get together. I went
up to that gentleman, and thank him for his attentiveness and support.
He responded, "Sorry lady, no habla English."
..Jane
