Subject: Chamber Toastmasters 2008-2009 Membership Growth Program - Status Report

Some here have expressed interest in getting an update on
the membership building program I've been throwing together
for my club.

While the campaign doesn't formally begin until Tuesday,
because at this point new members will be processed as
joining in July, effectively the program is already off and
running.

For the "Embarrass the VP Membership" campaign, all members
(except me) have been assigned to one of four "support
groups".  (Calling them teams makes it sound too much like a
contest.)  The support groups, with their colours, are:
Charlie (magenta), Foxtrot (cyan), Tango (green) and Zulu
(purple).

The support group colour is important.  The membership are
working towards meeting or exceeding two out of three
stretch performance targets.  If the club does this, I will
dye my hair the colour of the support group that is most
effective at helping the club build membership based on
member attendance, guests invited, and new members
sponsired.

Based in part on feedback from other posters and feedback
from club members, the three stretch performance targets
are:

* Membership of 24 by May 31, 2009
* Average member attendance from September 1, 2008, to May
31, 2009, of 80%
* Average number of non-Toastmaster guests per meeting from
September 1, 2008, to May 31, 2009, of 3.5.  (Guests are
counted once for each meeting attended, so if a guest
attends three meetings, he or she is counted three times.)

Right now, the primary focus is making sure as many members
as possible (ideally 100%) are award of the program and the
three membership building campaigns.

Tuesday they get an e-mail reminding them we are now
formally in the "Load the Dice" period for the fall
campiagn.  (Members who sponsor a new member in July or
August get advance credit for the fall campaign.  Attendance
and guests at summer meetings are not counted.)

I'll post the next update come August.

It sounds like a fun campaign.  I'll be interested in hearing how it goes.

It's supposed to be fun.

I've been thinking the problem with most membership building
campaigns is they are too much lik work.  Somebody told the
VP M membership campaigns help build membership.  So the VP
M organizes a campaign, and everybody goes to it with all
the enthusiams they have for going to the office.

Well, today I was thinking of ways to put the embarrass the
VP M campaign targets into terms that are easy to visualize.

Well, an 80% attendance is easy enough.  three of the four
support groups have four members and one has five members.
For the smaller support groups, if they get three people out
to every meeting, that is 75% turnout, which is just under
the target.  For a five person support group, getting four
members out to every meeting is 80%.  And for a six person
support group, getting five people out to every meeting is
just over 80%.

Something similar for the guests per meeting target.  At an
average of 3.5 guests per meeting, in a typical month with
four meetings that's 14 guests.  With 18 people on the
roster, if each member brings one guest per month, they'll
blow that target out of the water.  (We aren't even alloiwng
that the number of people will be lower because an
interested person might come to two or three meetings before
joining.)

The rest is just typical sales by numbers.  If the cub is
getting a dozen guests per month, we are welcoming, and are
running good meetings, then we should get at least one new
member per month dropping into the hat.

You've obviously put a lot of thought into this.  With your permission, I'll
forward this message, which contains your plan and some of the details, to
the VPM of my clubs.  They might get some ideas.

Some of the figures would have to be modified.  My "home club" has over 30
members on paper, but I've never met some of them in the 17 years I've
belonged.  They keep renewing their membership as a show of support, but
don't attend.  One woman who joined after I did and was active for several
years, has moved 200 miles away, but renews her membership every time.
However, we have members who could come more than they do.

Anyway, I wish you and your club luck with the program, and look forward to
seeing a picture of your new hair color at the end of the drive.

BTW, I'm really glad to see you using this newsgroup.  I read the other
group and respond occasionally, but I find it very cumbersome.

Go right ahead.

Every club has its own situation.  What will work for my
club may or may not work for another club.

We don't have the issue of members renewing year after year
just to show support.  Nor do we have members who live 200
miles out of town.

While my official position with the stretch performance
targets is that the club can't meet any of them, because the
never have, this is one time I won't mind losing.

Usenet does have its advantages.
