Hi. I'm thinking of buying a bass guitar. I don't play in a band or
anything but I would like a decent one that's around two hundred
dollars. There's so many out there to choose from. Are there any in that
price range that sound and play really good, like something that would
cost a lot more? (I can dream, can't I?) Thanks for any advice.

Over the years, I have owned a few:
The one I owned that I liked the best was a B4 fretless that I got
from the "In Stock" section. I'm still regretting selling it. It had a
fast neck, I liked the ebony board a lot. It was passive with the J99
single coil jazz style pickups, and they had a more modern sound that

I played percussion in a band in 1993 that I was the bass player in the
year before. The guy who replaced me had a 93' Carvin. I though it was a
wonderful bass. I had a BB75 and loved it for what it was but I sold it
because I bought if off the rack at the Hollywood Ca. store. It was the only
one they had and I just couldn't wait to order one but I never could get

Nit - side dots are "between" the frets not on them.
Just curious, we had a thread about dot placement on fretless a while back.
I played a highly modified jazz fretless last week and I noticed that the
dots were really right where they would be on a fretted model. This one
didn't have lines. My thought is that I like having the dots where I'm used

Cost
then with a tweed case was about $1150.
The bass seems solid and stable. Tuning exhibits some temperature
sensitivity so going outside usually throws it out of tune. Come to

My policy is no rehearsal for one week before a gig. If
we have a gig every week, no rehearsal at all except
to polish new songs, and then only if there's significant
rubato sections or other things that *should* be managed
by situational awareness on stage. I will
distribute lead sheets or even MIDI of people's parts
