TN: 1998 M. Chapoutier (Domaine des Beates) Coteaux d'Aix en Provence "Terra d'Or"

Opened this evening along with a dinner of grilled Italian sausage with pasta and vegetables. The blend in this is 40% Syrah, 40% Cabernet and Sauvignon and 20% Grenache, but initially the Grenache character dominates. Upon popping and pouring this has a nose that would make it easy to mistake for a top class Chateauneuf with lots of Provencal herbs,... more »

TN: 6.5 vintages of Poyferre vs. Barton
|
| |
Matt Richman arranged a Leoville-Leoville showdown, comparing some mature (or maturing) Bartons and Poyferres. Paul Jauoen arranged for dinner at Morton's , nice meal (though while steaks are always good, I'm still perplexed as to an appetizer to have with red Bordeaux, I chickened out with a salad).... more »

wine and global warming
|
| |
How is global warming supposed to affect wine production? As climate changes, the quality of the wine produced in many regions will change. Are the effects already evident? Regards, Alexandre Couto de Andrade

Wines and vintners of Mosel 2007
|
| |
Some of you may remember my annual trips to the Middle Mosel village of Erden for the local wine festival, a nice folksy venue and event. For the 15 of us who went there it's a social gathering with food, wine and company, but it includes serious tasting as well and visits to local vintners. Fwiw, a few observations and notes follow:... more »

With tuna steaks in a tomato/olive sauce and quinoa, the 2001 Sella Lessona. I was a little worried at first, there was a little pruney edge. This bottle had a bit of a stained label, even though it came from a fairly trusted source I worried a bit that there was some damage. Who knows, but after just 20 or 30 minutes of air the Lessona... more »

Fast Tasting Notes
|
| |
Notes from a portfolio tasting These wines were all tasted at an event arranged by one of the better BC agents – the ones that seek out interesting stuff and take the time to familiarize their clientele with things they might not otherwise think of buying. I apologize in advance for the prices. That isn’t the agent’s fault;... more »

global warming and wines
|
| |
...As the climate has warmed, wines made in affected regions have been getting riper and more alcoholic. A good example is German Riesling, where every year in the new millenium has produced wines in each Prädikat and several years ('03, '05, '06) have produced no true Kabinetts. Warming has also led to an expansion of wine production to... more »

yet another 07 Dr L TN (hey, where's my meat?)
|
| |
Last night Betsy made a few recipes from her favorite vegetarian cookbook, Lord Krishna's Cuisine. Glazed carrots (turmeric, cardamom, coriander), spiced creamed spinach ("Malai sak"), and a rice and pea pilaf with almonds. Not a menu to risk an expensive wine on, I contemplated cheap bubbly, but went with cheap Riesling, The 2007... more »

What do you look for in a small grower's Champagne?
|
| |
Re-reading the thread about Pierre Moncuit's Hugues de Coulmet started by Richard Neiddich I noticed that in small growers' Champagne I not only look for a good wine (usually at a lower price than Maisons) but I really look for a sense of place. And, so, I love Pierre Peters in Le Mesnil, Agrapart in Avize, or Gatinois... more »
