I can't believe Paramount did that. S1 was a perfect release in every
way. No trash, great prints, outstanding original material, simple
menus and a "Play All" feature that gave you the option to run the
disc all the way through. That's the way I like a DVD.
The first season was all I really wanted of the show anyway, but I
made the impetuous error of buying both S2 and S3 and found that the
studio had made a mess of its menu design and eliminated the "Play
All" feature ... excuse me? That's not an enhancement, it's a
ridiculous screw up in reverse, and if I could return the products, I
would.
They set it up to allow you to run the "promos" all the way through,
but not the individual episodes. What possessed them to do that? I
mean, who the hell watches promos over and over again, and how many
people buy DVD titles for their special features? It's absurd.
Truth is, I found S2 and S3 sitting on a Best Buy shelf for $19.99
each, or I wouldn't have them at all. The prints are as fine as S1,
but by S3, it's hard to deny that Hawaii Five-0 had turned into a
formulaic bore of recycling cast members. At least, for me it is.
Yeah, they all entertain, and there are many excellent episodes, but
after the production had lost the novelty of its islander charm, it
was pretty much 10 seasons of 24ct overkill. I don't think the studio
will release all 12 either. I don't know why, but I'll be surprised if
they get past 6..
