Subject: Biting
hi group.
Our 4 yar old male neutered dale is a great guy.
We keep a prong pinch collar on him, because of his strength.
85lbs.
I was at work this eve, and my wife went to bring him in.
He was sitting in the stoop outside the side door where we let him out.
he would not come in for her, so she grabbed his prong collar, and he
growled at her, then bit her..
No broken skin, but she was angry!
He has tried to do it to me, when i grab hus collar.
I am assum ing it hurts when we grab the prong collar, and that is why
he bit, but I want to be sure.
Thanx.
Ali

One thing you might want to note is not to use a prong collar on him all the
time.  Should only be used for training or corrections. He knows it hurts
when you grab it...so he reacts the best way he knows how. Show him only
good comes from being handled...like give treats when he does things right.
When you call him and he comes "treat" him and praise.Soon he will come for
the treat and be happy to be handled." Positive reinforcement,." My big
Airedale was 120 lbs.  and would run through fire if he had to, just to come
to me...mostly because of  postive   treats!  I used a prong collar on him
only during training.. Its never too late for an obedience class.
Good Luck
Mike

Thanx, Mike.
I took it off, and it will stay off, unless I need it.
Appreciate it.

I have a 2 year old nuetered male Airhead, I mean Airedale:)  He's gone
threw the nipping phase and I would never dream of putting a prong
collar on the big guy, he wieghs 85-90#'s as well.  If I did he would
probably throw himself on the floor and mope for days on end.  Our
favorite trick is the treat method, and if he in a particularly
stubborn mood we just say "EWWWWW" and his curiosity gets the best of
him since he can't stand to not know what he is missing and he will
come running.  Of course, this is followed with a treat.

I really do love this breed of dog, best I have ever owned!  Positive
reinforcement is the key to this breed.
