Below are links to google maps of convenience stores in North Texas and Southern Oklahoma that may be of use to brevet and permanent route makers. One of the hardest things to do in making routes is locate suitable controls. The stores shown in the below maps may help in this regard.
These stores were compiled from existing route cue sheets, personal knowledge, and internet searches. I am surprised by how many of these places I have visited on a bike. I have listed addresses, store hours, and whether the stores have tables and/or a grill. Please verify hours of operation before relying on a store for a late night ride! Stores do change hours. Also, there have been numerous name changes in recent years. Valero, in particular, has been very aggressive in changing existing stores over to their name. Stores are sometimes also known by more than one name. For example, you might have the Anytown Country Store with a Valero sign out front. That store might be listed in the phone book under either name. I've tried to be accurate in placing each store on the map by using either personal knowledge or examining aerial photos to pick out the store. I have found large inaccuracies in where internet mapping sites such as google, yahoo, or mapquest estimate a street address in rural areas, so always verify the exact store location before using it on a cue sheet!
Obviously, not every convenience store in the area is shown on the maps. I've tried to show those stores that are used for existing controls or that I think might be useful
And finally, if you have any additions or corrections to the list, by all means, let me know and I'll include the information. George Evans North Texas Convenience Stores Southern Oklahoma Convenience Stores Added 13 Jan 2008: I have been including the location of the nearest mailbox to the convenience store listings. For most small towns, the closest mailbox is usually at the post office but once in a while there's a closer mailbox. Although the USPS does not have a mailbox locator on their website, I found this site: Mailbox Locator that has a copmprehensive list of mailboxes throughout the US.
