Marko Polo Century for Mark Sachnik's birthday with Plano Bicycle
Association and the Lone Star Randonneurs
Sunday 07/06/08 at Alma/Hedgecoxe in Plano, 8:00 am start
How about a birthday party! Oh, too busy riding the bike to make a
party? OK how about a birthday ride. Better yet, a birthday century!
Here are alll the details regarding this Sunday's Populaire (also
posted to the PBA site):
Ride leader and devoted PBA/LSR member Mark Sachnik, who passed away
December 31,2007, would be celebrating his birthday on Monday July
7th. So how about a birthday ride in his honor on Sunday July 6th!
This is a joint ride with the Plano Bicycle Association (PBA) and the
Lone Star Randonneurs (LSR), and open to any other riders wanting a
nice route with great riders. No entry fee, no requirements, unless
you want distance credit with the randonneurs (RUSA). The main rules
are ride safe and HAVE FUN, as Mark would want it!
This is the same route and same guidelines from the Marko Polo Century
earlier this year (February 17th). Most of the following information
is the same from that ride:
Fellow randonneur and friend of Mark, George Evans, mapped a 171 km
route (106 miles) in Mark's honor called the "Marko Polo Century."
The route is a variation of the PBA fall century route.
This ride is a "Populaire," and there are no randonneur or RUSA
membership requirements for a Populaire. Thus, any and all are
welcome to come out and join PBA and LSR for this special tribute to
Mark! We would love a large turnout, as would Mark. Mark promoted
cycling, and he liked to recruit others to challenge their own speed
and distance limits.
This is also a great introduction to the Lone Star Randonneurs, meet
some new faces, and maybe test the long distance waters for anyone
interested. If you would like credit for the ride with RUSA, you are
welcome to join RUSA for $20 (you receive interesting newsletters and
a booklet about long distance cycling) but again, not mandatory.
Also, we will have Populaire pins available to all finishers again for
$2.00, and they look great!
The main requirements for this ride are:
Sign the waiver
Wear a helmet
Night/reflective gear if riding after sunset (should not be an issue
with daylight savings)
Carry a control card (designated stops in Caddo Mills, Celeste, and
Princeton to have the card signed, this is easy and we can walk you
through it)
RSVP, even if you are only halfway interested, so that we have enough
cards.

the rando thing. You'll all be on your best behavior, won't you?? ;^)
