Bob Perkins, Mica Paluzzi, Allen Boynton and I had those golden kinglets up
at the Pinnacles in Grayson Highlands on Saturday, along with one or two
brown creepers, a handful of hermit thrushes, one yellow-billed cuckoo,
Tennessee, black and white, black throated blue, black throated green
warblers, other stuff as well. Ain't fall great?

Had my first of the season golden-crowned kinglets today. Also saw & heard several pine warblers, scarlet tanagers and TN warblers. A gray-cheeked thrush was dead at the base of the park headqurters window this morning.
Jim Phillips
Summers County
Pipestem, WV

Just got a good look at a sedge wren in our yard. It was about three feet from me and in the open. Then it headed into the neighbor's hay field.
We still have a palm warbler eating suet and at least one hummer is still here.
Jim & Judy Phillips
Summers County
Pipestem, WV

After a few weeks of relative quiet, I have seen at least 7-10 hummingbirds at my feeders and flowers the last couple of days. I had almost taken my feeders down due to lack of use; now I am glad I have kept a few up. So far, they all look to be Ruby-throated's.
Dr. Carol Croy
Blacksburg, VA

I am responding to the herbicide question. A high school classmate is director of Rachel Carson Council, and their purpose is to disseminate information on use of poisons and of alternate options. They will try to respond to anyone's inquiry, so anyone reading this can keep the e-mail and use it for such questions. If wdunson wants the information she offered to mail, feel free to contact her directly. I freely admit I'm clueless about all of this but I hope it helps.

It is apparently a good time for palm warblers. While touring the woods and fields of Bland County on Monday, I ran onto three separate flights of palm warblers. All were in open field areas along fencerows and roadsides where red cedars were present. One lone common yellowthroat, in contrast, was in mixed oak woods - nowhere near any wet areas as one might expect.
