Hey everyone.. I've been developing a trip map in google maps and
Earth recently and now the import function on maps is not working
anymore. Anytime I try to import a file from either my local machine
or online it trys and then reports that it couldn't complete the
upload. I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem (i see one
is).
Note that I created these KML files using google earth. I also tried
exporting to GE and then saved the placemarks independently on my
local machine into another KML file to compare these two. They are
identical. Is this a problem others are having?? has anyone tried the
import function on Google Maps lately?

Its currently broken for me (and other reports on this group) too :( - No file works...
As a work around you can upload the file somewhere (eg with FTP) and then paste in its URL into the bottom box on the Import dialog - that tends to be more reliable.
The alternative is like mentioned paste the url direct into the Search box - that will display your file. You can even save it (as non editable) to MyMaps tab with the link provided.

THANK YOU BARRY... this is what I was looking for was a confirmation
of it being broken.
Uploading my file from an already online location isn't working for me
at the moment either Barry, but hopefully I can get this solution to
work later.
As for NWT, I said that I've tried importing from online stored
versions of the file already, and while the search box method does
work (already knew about it) the fact that the file is non-editable
pretty much negates me from using this as a solution. So I guess I
will just have to be patient for a few and wait for the upload and/or
url functions to start working for me.
Like I said I was looking for confirmation of the upload function
being broken, thanks again Barry!

I just used the Import feature of My Maps by posting the URL of my KML. It worked fine.

How is the KML file non-editiable? Open it with a text editor.

Why isn't it working for you? All you need is a place to host the file. There are numerous file storage sites on the net that are free.
My problem is not that I cannot edit this file on my local computer,
it's that once uploaded to google maps (through the search box method,
only one that works for me now) it is not editable by others through
the Google Maps interface. This is ultimately what I have needed to
happen in the past, it's the easiest way for my friends to edit as
they don' t have any extensive computer skills. Asking them to type in
map coordinates themselves and editing kml/xml files is more than I'm
willing to do. Even having them run Google Earth would make more
hassle than I'm willing to put them through. No one said that KML was
non editable, we just were talking about how once saved in My Maps
(whether for contributors or not) the map is then non editable using
the GM interface.

Right. And that is because you are not using the correct method. As I already said, use the Import feature and import using the same URL that you said works in the other method. Then designated those users as collaborators using the Collaborator link.

Ummm...You did. "...and while the search box method does work (already knew about it) the fact that the file is non-editable...", you said. Or are you saying that you did not write that?

That is not entirely correct. Follow the instructions that I provided.
Ownership of maps loaded by URL from the search box is attributed to
the hosting domain, hence the inability to edit.
It must be very frustrating that the import from URL via the normal
dialogue is not working for you. Is it that you have no means of
easily hosting the file on a server or are you still getting an error
message when trying that method?
