You can now enter your own categories for your business in the Local
Business Center. This is something we have been trying to improve for
some time now, and we're happy to announce that the team came up with
a great solution. You'll still have the option of choosing categories
from our list, but feel free to include your own as well!
Excellent addition. Having dealt with limited options provided by
print yellow pages for years, and having dealt with the restrictions
and limitations of categories within Google Maps this is an excellent
addition and flexibility for an ever expanding list of categories,
products and services.

IMHO most people won't upload in bulk and the pull down menu should
offer the same solution multiple legs to assure nomalization of the
lookup table.
I've seen a lot of companies who have their URL's wrong in the MAP
Guide and no one helps them. I think this issue is based on a couple
of tables have the same data in multiple fields.
If your MAPS section is using the field "Phone Number" to verify or
link "URL's" this could be the trouple I'm seeing on MAPS. How a
google search and map search come back with different and not correct
information is because of cross-table and field issues.
As for creating your own categories... as a person who maintains data
bases... This will come back to haunt us all on both sides of the
wall. Try and NORM that data base with 5000 different entries for the
same thing....
one phone number... for a large company with different URL's in
various divisions or groups and "MAPS" and "Google Saearch" get turned
around. It took Microsoft almost 2 weeks to solve the issue. I'm
sure that Google will fix it too. Google seems to care about their
customers.

I added a business yesterday and l only had the choice of drop downs
for the caterogies, but after reading this post l went back in to edit
the business details and now there are text boxes where l can add
categories as in your post.
Seems a bit strange but at least l got it to work now.

Hmm, l was top listing for 'self catering' category that l manually
entered, but l checked today and my listing doesn't appear at all
now!! Not sure why??
When will the 'add your own category' section be available in Europe
(or, outside the google.com domain). I noticed this option only
appeared when I login to the LBC using the .com, when I use the local
ones (.es / .nl ones i'm using ) it still is only showing the old
categories (which are only a few ).
Would like to hear some news on this one!

Ive entered my own but they don't seem to show up. E.G, are street
have all added shops as one of the options but it hasn't done
anything, how long do we have to wait for it to be updated on the map.
On mine i originally (accidentally) put shop instead of shops
realising my mistake, i added shops and deleted shop, yet it still
only shows up as shop. what am i doing wrong.
