You need to be in Standard view to use that function.

I agree this is stupid.  I am on dial up and
regularly have problems getting signed in
with standard view.  Having to switch
back to standard view to clean out spam
is not helpful.

Also due to the dial up; I browse with images
turned off by default which makes selecting
and deleting individual message harder though
not imposssible.  Google lords, please fix
for us lowly dial up denizens

I guess the "select all" function runs scripts that are not compatible
with HTML. But I'm no expert, it's just a guess. If you can only sign
in via dial-up, then just don't bother about deleting spam - it will
be deleted 30 days after it had arrived anyway.
