Update on New Middlesex Fells Trail System Plan

As reported earlier, FellsDOG and other user groups were invited to attend a September meeting held by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (“DCR”) regarding plans for developing and implementing a comprehensive Middlesex Fells Trail System Plan. DCR had said they will complete an inventory of the entire Fells trail system this fall, and will then will host a Stakeholder and Public Planning Workshop, open to the public, to get direct input on developing the new trail plan. Public review of a draft plan will take place next Spring, with hopes of having the new plan in place by May 2010.

In early November, Paul Jahnige, Director of the Greenways and Trails Program for DCR reported that the Trail System planning process continues to move forward, and DCR is currently engaged in completing its full Road and Trail inventory for the Reservation. DCR is still planning to organize a stakeholder / user workshop in early 2010, and once it is scheduled DCR will issue a public announcement and let key stakeholders know directly. DCR also expects to post additional information on its website (www.mass.gov/dcr), under the Public Meetings page.

FellsDOG will continue to participate in the process, and advocate for the new trail plan to finally include off-leash dog recreation at the Sheepfold. The user workshop will be an opportunity for dog owners to make our voices heard, and convey that we care about the environment, we respect the rights of all park users, and we think the time has come for legal off-leash recreation at the Sheepfold.
