Hopefully this post is not too far OFF topic. If it is, please forgive the intrusion.
I have a question for operators of letterpress. I have a Miehle Vertical on which I'm trying to score a tri-fold brochure. The brochure is printed on 100# Gloss Text which normally wouldn't require a score, but it was printed digitally(toner based) and is cracking like crazy on the folder.
Here's my question: Is channel matrix appropriate to use in this case, with the paper being so light? If so, what size? I had #40(Buff) here already, but the score that it created was too deep, or too wide, or both so that when the sheet is folded the fold is rectangular instead of U shaped. Does that make any sense?
Anyway, after calling Wagner Die Supply, they recommended #32(Orange), but it's doing the same thing. Honestly, I can't tell the difference in the score created by the #32 as opposed to the #40. They both look the same to me.
Have u tried talking to CCM directly? They are pretty helpful folks. 1(800) 451-7373 in Martinsburg, W. VA. 1(800) 972-2601 in Tucker, GA - Ed McDowell

Thanks for the reply! No I didn't talk to them, but received more info from Wagner. I believe my problem was from several issues.
1. I probably have the cylinder overpacked. 2. I am using an uneven worn metal jacket with indentations, etc. 3. Because of the first two issues, I think my creasing rule height was too much.
So, I resolved it by simply purchasing a shorter creasing rule. The #32 creasing matrix was pretty much right on for the 2pt rule that I am using, but I would like to try 1pt creasing rule with #24 creasing matrix just for kicks if I could find it. But from what I can gather, the 1pt rule is rare.
I have had good success using a crush score on my Miehle V-50. My set up would be to run an 8.5x11 with the gripper on the 8.5 inch side. (horizontal rules) I pack my cylinder up to specs and take a strip of shipping carton tap and place it where the rule hits the Tympan. This tape is optional but allows you to reuse the tympan. (keeps the tape from ripping off the paper fibers) The next step is to use four or five strips of 3M (256?) white art tape (masking tape works). Take the strips of tape and lay them on top of each other building up a thick layer of tape. It's pretty much guess work until you figure out what works with your rule height. Next slowly inch the press until the rule scores the tape and double check to make sure you're not hitting it too hard. Now I would run a few test sheets to see if it's scoring properly.
I use crush scores all the time and prefer this method for vertical scores.
