Get Scouting in the News

"YOU OUGHTA BE IN PICTURES..."

By Mindy Chemacki

... or rather your scouts should be!  In order to make our local communities aware of the scouting movingment and the value that is adds to our world, you should be taking many pictures of this things that put the "out" in scouting. Reporting on service projects and field trips is an excellent way to increase enrollment numbers for your pack and dens.  Not only does this increase awareness of the scouting movingment in general but it motivates your boys (and girls- can't forget our Venturers) when they get to see their faces in the local paper or in an on camera interview. :)

When your scouts complete a service project, take tons of pictures- preferably digital pictures.  You may even have a parent who is photography fanatic and is just dying for an opportunity to get click happy at one of your events! (All those closet scrapbookers will come out of the woodwork.)   The picture to above is featuring Den 10 of Pack 318 in May 2007 when they picked up litter at Carlisle Elementary (yes, that was one of my dens and they made me very proud!)

General guidelines

Please type and double-space your news release on standard-

size paper. Include your name and a daytime telephone

number. Make sure the release includes the address of

where an event will be held.

Submit one copy of each press release. If people

from different areas are mentioned, please tell us where each

person is from.

Specify in which of the SNP papers is most important for your

news to appear, and why. The number of papers in which an

item can appear is limited because of our emphasis on local

news and the competition for space in our papers.

Stress any local ties in the information you submit. For example:

Upper Arlington residents win awards from a statewide

organization.

Please provide addresses of people featured in your news

item. Most media will not publish personal addresses, but

uses them to determine in which of our papers an item should

be published.

Be brief and to the point, but be complete. Read your release

several times, checking to see you have included the basics:

who, what, when, where, why and how. Make sure names

and telephone numbers are correct.

Photographs

Submitted photographs can be color or black and white.

Focus and lighting are important, particularly of the faces pictured.

Be sure to clearly identify each person in the photo and list

them from left to right and in rows front to back, if applicable.

Place your name and telephone number on the back of the

photo.

When a large group of people from different communities is

involved, it is best to arrange the people by area and shoot a

separate photo for each appropriate paper.

To have your photo returned, include a self-addressed,

stamped envelope. In most cases, unpublished photos are discarded

after one month.

All Press Releases should include a name,

address and phone number for verification purposes.

Phone numbers and addresses will not be printed in the

paper. Submitted columns are handled on a case-by-case

basis. To arrange for the submission of a column, call the

commentary editor or the paper editor.

Next, contact your local media outlets. If they welcome pictures, send them along with a description of what your group has done and who in your group contributed.  Here are just a few of the places that you can publically gush in a press release about your events, your scouts and their accomplishments.  It is suggested you submit your item several weeks before an event whenever possible. Because of space limitations, submission of a news item before deadline is not always a guarantee of publication.
