slight, and comes from the fact that the video is being shot at a slower
speed than it is being displayed, which, like shooting 24p for std video

Excellent post. But it begs two questions. First, what's the big
difference between 25fps and 24fps _not_ counting odd presets?
Second, what would they call it if they were shooting 720p@24fps? 724p?

Two major parts of the difference are 1) the difference in the implied
translation of motion at the lower frame rate, and 2) the decrease in
"dynamic resolution" at the lower frame rate.

Yes, after sleeping on it that's the conclusion I came to as well. But
now I'm even more curious to get this confirmed, as I'm not even sure
the cameras mentioned can _do_ 1080p@24fps. Certainly I know we'll
never do it with HDV.
Can lowering the frame rate by 1-6 fps really make a particularly
pleasing difference? Has anyone ever shot side by side footage and run

I'm not sure about ATSC but the EBU has only TWO HD transmission formats
(720/25p and 1080/50i), all the rest are acquisition only formats. The
latest cameras in our fold (I work for a rental shop) have about a dozen
different formats. I'm guessing Randy meant 1080/24P.

Oops, forgot to mention - I was surprised that everyone did 24P now.
Then they do that pulldown thing to bring it to 29.97 NTSC.
I think this is how the "film look" discussion inevitably came about,
and I really sounded like a dinosaur saying that 24P doesn't look like

I met up with some members of the local Mac Users Group, and we spent
the whole night talking about the state of post right now.

I found out that practically everyone is shooting TVCs on P2 in Manila
right now, and posting in 1024P, I think (unless I got my facts
screwed up). Then they drop it down to SD Betacam for distribution.
